●Press Release●
A study has been started to evaluate the effectiveness of specialised rehabilitation for cancer patients hospitalised in a palliative care unit.

Presented by Nanako Nishiyama, Assistant Professor and Occupational Therapist, JORTC Guest Researcher, Osaka Prefecture University

The protocol article of our research group's project, " The efficacy of specialised rehabilitation using the Op-reha Guide for cancer patients in palliative care units: protocol of a multicentre, randomised controlled trial (JORTC-RHB02)," was published in BMC Palliative Care on October 22, 2020.

Summary

This study has been conducting with research support from JORTC since it was awarded as a joint Japan-Australia research project at the Aust-Japan Palliative Care Trials Project (AJPCT Project) held in November 2017.

The aims of this randomised controlled trial are as follows.

To evaluate the efficacy of a new, comprehensive guide for rehabilitation therapists, the “Op-reha Guide”, designed to maintain activities of daily living (ADL) of terminal cancer patients hospitalised in palliative care units (PCUs). An intervention group will receive treatment based on the Op-reha Guide*1 while a control group will receive usual rehabilitation.
We will compare the control group with the observation group to quantitatively evaluate the efficacy of usual rehabilitation. The observation group will come from PCUs that do not routinely have rehabilitation therapists perform rehabilitation for terminal cancer patients.

Enrollment started in July 2019. Participants will be recruited from 17 PCUs across Japan. The enrollment period is planned until December 2021.

We expect that the findings from this study will contribute to a future in which quality rehabilitation by rehabilitation therapists can be provided in palliative care units.
